How to Choose an IoT Platform for HVAC Remote Monitoring

Remote monitoring turns an installed base into a live fleet: equipment reports its own operating data, service teams diagnose problems without a site visit, and the manufacturer's brand stays on the equipment owner's phone for the life of the unit. An HVAC equipment manufacturer that wants to build that capability into its product line has four realistic options: a major OEM's platform, an HVAC-specific monitoring product, an IoT platform you build your own offering on, or a custom build from scratch.

The choice comes down to two questions: whose brand does the equipment owner see, and how fast do you need a working product shipping with your equipment? For a manufacturer, the hardware side is simpler than it is for most platform buyers: connectivity goes on your control boards. If you want the monitoring offering under your own brand, building on an IoT platform is usually the right answer.

Why HVAC manufacturers are connecting equipment now

Maintenance economics. The US Department of Energy's Federal Energy Management Program puts the savings from predictive maintenance at 8-12% over a preventive program, and as much as 30-40% over running equipment to failure (DOE FEMP O&M Best Practices Guide).

The refrigerant transition. Under the EPA's Technology Transitions rule, new residential and light commercial systems must use refrigerants with a GWP below 700 as of January 2025, driving the move to A2L refrigerants like R-32 and R-454B US EPA. If the transition has you redesigning control boards anyway, that's the natural moment to add connectivity.
